What is a good engagement rate?

Engagement rate (ER) measures how actively your audience interacts with your content relative to your follower count. It is the number brands check first — often before follower count — because it signals whether your audience actually pays attention.

The standard formula this calculator uses:

ER = (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100

General benchmarks (they vary by platform, niche, and follower tier):

Engagement rateWhat it signals
Under 1%Low — worth improving before pitching brands
1–3.5%Average — solid, especially on larger accounts
3.5–6%Strong — attractive to brands
Over 6%Excellent — common on engaged nano/micro accounts

Smaller accounts usually post higher ER than large ones, which is exactly why brands hire nano and micro creators: a 10K account at 6% often out-converts a 200K account at 1%. Lead with your engagement rate when you pitch — and put it at the top of your media kit.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

The most common method is (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. This calculator uses that formula. If your platform gives you reach or views data, you can also calculate ER by reach — average interactions ÷ average reach × 100 — which is often more accurate for accounts where posts reach beyond their followers.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram and TikTok?

It depends on follower tier. As a rough guide, 1–3.5% is average, 3.5–6% is strong, and over 6% is excellent. Nano and micro creators (under 100K) typically run higher than large accounts. TikTok engagement (measured against followers) often reads higher than Instagram because of how the algorithm distributes content.

Does follower count or engagement rate matter more to brands?

For most campaigns, engagement rate and audience fit matter more than raw follower count. A highly engaged, well-matched audience converts better than a large but passive one. That is why YoCreate brands regularly hire creators with smaller, engaged followings.
